A Rake's Guide to Pleasure (Huntington #2)

A Rake's Guide to Pleasure by Victoria Dahl is her second historical romance about the Huntington family.

The Dowager Lady Denmore, Emma, has come to London to raise some money. Her plan is to apply her skills at gambling to win the money she needs to live off of for the rest of her life. She plans to be gone before the Season begins and people who may recognize her come back to town.

Dahl is a writer who takes romance to a new level - both sexy and humorous, her stories capture readers and take them on a wild ride. This book is no exception with its nonconforming characters and the situations they get themselves into. A great read.

The Desert Spear (Demon Cycle #2)

The Desert Spear by Peter V. Brett is the second book in his brilliant Demon Cycle series. In a world where demons rise in the darkness and people hide behind magic wards to keep them at bay, some are beginning to fight back. Wards for combat instead of defense will allow the rise of a Deliverer who will lead humans in the next Demon War.

Ahmann Jardir of Krasia, a desert kingdom in the South, claims that he is the Deliverer, or Shar'Dama Ka. His people have put every faith in him and his rise to power believing that he will lead them to victory over the demons. But first they are to conquer the people of greenlands in the north - to unite them under Jardir's word.

Arlen Bales from Tibbet's Brook, Leesha Paper from Cutter's Hollow, and Rojer Inn of Riverbridge have already begun to teach people to fight the demons. The village of Cutter's Hollow even changed it's name to Deliverer's Hollow after a battle in which most every able citizen fought - the first time people in the North have fought back outside of folk tales.

But the legend does not allow for two Deliverers. Eventually, either Arlen or Ahmann must prove to be the true Deliverer.  This sequel continues the story with the intensity readers enjoyed in the Warded Man. This fantasy series is amazing and would hold its own against any other fantasy series I have read. Start reading it today!

Blackout

Blackout by John Rocco is a great picture book about the New York City blackout of 2003.

The young girl in the story is bored. She wants someone to pay attention to her but her family is busy - her sister is on the phone, her mother is on the computer, and her father is cooking dinner. She gives up and goes to her room to play video games.

But then the lights go out. This story is told in a simple but beautiful illustrations which is highlighted on the page that shows the New York skyline as it usually is then as it fades to black.

Suddenly, the family has time to spend together. They make shadow animals and are having a good time. When the August heat drives them outside they meet up with their neighbors - as everyone in the city with roof access was outside hoping for a breeze.

Rocco captured the feel of the city in a blackout - neighbors come together and have impromptu feasts to consume all of the perishable food, they wander around the city and glory in the silence, and they look at the stars (which are only visible in a blackout). This book is a must read for any New Yorker who was here for the 2003 blackout and really anyone who has spent a great family evening huddled together around a flashlight or candles entertaining each other.

To Tempt a Scotsman (Huntington #1)

To Tempt a Scotsman by Victoria Dahl is the first book in her Huntington series of historical romance. This was her first published novel.
Lady Alexandra Huntington does not conduct herself like the average Lady in Yorkshire in 1844. She runs the estate of her brother, the Duke. She does not follow the rules of the Ton because she has had a scandal and is now free of the game to find a husband.

Collin Blackburn swore to his father to track down the man who killed his brother in a duel of Lady Alexandra. He has an idea of what to expect when he meets her but she is nothing like he imagined her to be.

Now that she has met him, Alexandra thinks that maybe being a fallen woman has it advantages. She can have an affair with Collin and not have to marry him. But once she kissed him they cannot get each other out of their heads.

Dahl is known for her contemporary romance and the humor she adds to plot and dialogue. Her historical romance is just a high quality and fun to read. Dahl is a great choice for any romance readers who need a book to read.

The Warded Man (Demon Cycle #1)

The Warded Man by Peter V Brett is an amazing fantasy book and the first in his Demon Cycle series.

The land in which the series takes place could be our own if you went back to the Middle Ages. People live in small hamlets or small cities and work hard from dawn until dusk. The main difference is that from dusk until dawn demons rise out of the Core and hunt. Magical symbols, or wards, are all that stand between demon and death for the humans and animals.

Legend has it that long ago people fought back against the demons. Today no one really thinks it is possible to kill a demon and most attacked by one do not recover.

Arlen of Tibbet's Brook, a small hamlet far from the cities, has reasons to want to fight back. With the events of one night he goes from an innocent child who cowers inside at night listening to the demons try to break through the wards to a young man who has revenge on his mind. His journey will take him farther than most will ever travel. (Since there are very few who will spend the night outdoors even protected by a warded traveling circle.)

Leesha of Cutter's Hollow is promised to a woodcutter. Once she is old enough she will be married and start a family of her own. But when fire demons burn part of the town, she helps the Herb Gatherer to heal the injured and finds a new path in life.

Finally, Rojer of Riverbridge is on of few survivors of a demon attack. He is thrust into the arms of a jongleur (a performer who travels with a messenger to spread news and entertain) by his mother to save his life with her own.

These three great characters follow their paths as readers fall in love them and learn more about the world in which they live. It is a world full of terror and hope. Peter Brett has created a place that readers will hope he continues to write about for the next twenty years, at least. It will be as well loved as Anne McCaffrey's Pern or Tamora Pierce's Tortall.

If you are at all a fantasy reader read this series. I am going to buy the books to read again and again - and as my 3 fans know that is the highest compliment since I am a librarian and have unlimited access to books at work.

Thomas has created a fun story with beautiful, brightly colored illustrations.

Buckhorn Beginnings (Buckhorn #1 and #2)

Buckhorn Beginnings by Lori Foster is a reissue of the first two books (Sawyer and Morgan) in her Buckhorn series about four brothers.

Sawyer Hudson is the oldest of four brothers. He lives with brothers and his son on 50 acres in Kentucky. He is the local doctor.

While mending a fence on the edge of their property, Sawyer and his son Casey see a car fly down the road, through the newly mended fence and into their lake. Inside is Honey Malone. She is on the run from someone chasing her.

Now Sawyer will try to figure out how to help Honey while trying to convince her to stay on the ranch forever.

Morgan Hudson is the second oldest. He is the sheriff because he likes to be in control - or so people think based on his reputation and usual scowl. But Misty Malone sees right through him. He is a big hearted man who cannot stand to see injustice.

But Misty is not looking for any man. She has sworn them off. She is only in Buckhorn to see her sister married. Then she will figure out what to do about the situation she is in - jobless, homeless, and pregnant.

Foster is a romance writer of great talent. She creates characters who readers instantly connect with and her stories develop loyal fans. If you need a quick, fun read with some romance, find yourself a Lori Foster novel.

Ganymede (Clockwork Century #4)

Ganymede by Cherie Priest is the fourth book that takes place in her alternate history, steampunk, zombi Civil War era called the Clockwork Century.

Andan Cly is an air pirate. He has made his living by transporting blight gas from Seattle to other places in the US where it is distilled into a drug. But lately he has been thinking of going legit - maybe even setting up an air dock in Seattle.

When he receives a telegram from an old friend he sees his chance to earn the money he needs to settle down. He has been invited to New Orleans to move a ship into the Gulf. It seems like an easy job for the money.

But the Ganymede is not an easy ship to move. In fact, it has killed many crews who have tried. It is basically the first submarine. Josephine Early thinks that Andan will have a better job of it because he is a pilot and those who tried in the past have been sailors.

Also - though the project will be funded by the North once Josephine proves the Ganymede worth it - it is being sought by the Republic of Texas (who control New Orleans) and the South. And the number of Texas soldiers has recently doubled since two officers disappeared.

Priest's vision of the world for this steampunk series is creative and true. She takes history and add machines that were plausible for the time period creating a great fantasy setting for her great characters. Fans will see characters from all of her previous books in this volume.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter #7)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling is the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series.

Before Harry, Ron, and Hermione can begin their final year at Hogwarts, the wizarding world is turned upside-down by Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Everything is Harry's life has changed and he knows that he is the only one who can defeat Voldemort.

The three friends were given a task by Dumbledor - to find the Horcruxes that Voldemort split his soul into. He cannot be destroyed until they are or he will just find his way back into the world in the future. But Harry, Ron, and Hermione have to figure out where the Horcruxes are and then how to destroy them.

This conclusion to the Harry Potter series is a dark masterpiece. Rowling is on par with J.R.R. Tolkien for her mastery of the fantasy genre. Her world is true to itself and her overall storyline must have been created at the beginning to have so seamlessly come together. The Harry Potter series is one of the most well-written, most exciting series I have read. If you have only seen the movies you are missing out.

Beth and Eric met at a local business expo. They shared one night together. Six months later, Beth is on a date at the brewery when she runs into Eric.

Dahl is a brilliant romance writer. Her stories are full of great characters with whom readers instantly identify. Her plots are interesting and fun. And her dialog is occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. Read one of her books today!

Murphy's Law (Law #2)

Murphy is the CEO of a company that has offices in the building - and he is instantly smitten by Ashley. Though she tries to blow him off, she can't stop thinking about him. Maybe she could find a little time to hang out with him. Everyone has to eat.

The Affair (Jack Reacher #16)

The Affair by Lee Child is the sixteenth book in his Jack Reacher series. This book takes place just before the first book in the series - The Killing Floor.

It is 1997 and Jack Reacher is still an MP in the US Army. He is assigned to undercover as a second detective in the murder of a woman outside a military base in Mississippi.

From the start the case does not feel right to Reacher. The facts he was given are not what happened - and the woman is the third victim of a similar crime in the small town next to the base.

Though on site as much to cover the military as any other reason, Reacher cannot let a murder go unsolved. Technically, if the murderer in from the town and not the base, it is not his jurisdiction.

Child's flashback into Reacher's past - his last case as an MP - will thrill fans. We finally know why he quit the military. Child's writing and character have just become better over the series. Anyone looking for a good mystery would do well to start the Reacher series.

Legend (Legend #1)

Legend by Marie Lu is the first book in her dystopian series by the same name. It is also her debut novel though you would not know it by the writing or the story.

Sometime in the future, after world war, plagues and more, the Republic of America is formed. It comprises the western half of what is now the United States. Territories to the East of the Republic are referred to as the Colonies, and are at war with the Republic.

June Iparis was born into a wealthy district of Los Angeles and therefore had every privilege. She lives with her older brother Matias. She is the youngest person at her college - a school for those who earn the highest scores on their Trials.

Trials, taken at age 10, determine where you will go in life. A high score means high school and college. A low score means that you will skip high school and begin working in a factory or other dangerous job. If you fail the test you will be sent to a work camp.

Day was born in one of the poorest sections of the Los Angeles region. And he failed his Trials. But he escaped the fate proscribed by the government. He is now the most infamous of criminals. His goal is to fight back against the system.

When June's brother is killed she is pulled out of school and told to track the killer - whom she is told was Day. Usually Day does not hurt people when committing crimes. Now June will go undercover to the Lake district to hunt for her brother's killer.

Lu's first book in the Legend series will grab readers and have them pacing until the next book is published. It is a well-crafted story with compelling characters that readers will relate to and who will be loyally followed through out the series. Legend is a look at one possible future for America (and the world) based on the prejudice and privilege that already exist in our society today. Buy a copy on November 29th when it is released!

Goliath (Leviathan #3)

Goliath by Scott Westerfeld is the conclusion of the Leviathan trilogy (except that his last trilogy ended up having four books, so fans can still hope for more!). The premise of the series is that instead of just discovering evolution, Darwin discovered DNA as well. As a result some countries developed machinery while others used DNA to create new type of beasts.

The Leviathan, the British airship, was created from whale DNA. It is a living, breathing ship that flies it crew around the sky. A whole ecosystem exists inside of it.

In this conclusion to the series, Dylan Sharp (actually Deryn disguised as a boy to join the service) and Prince Alek continue to do their part to help bring the war to an end. The Leviathan will make a detour to rescue a scientist who claims to be able to end the war with his contraption - the Goliath.

In this volume, Alek will discover Deryn's secret. The Leviathan will travel to many foreign lands. And a mad scientist will affect the outcome of the war.

Westerfeld has created a dynamic, steampunk alternative history of the Great War. His characters are compelling and his plot genius. Fans of so many different elements of story will delight in this series.

Westerfeld, Scott. (2011). Goliath. New York: Simon Pulse.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter #5)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by JK Rowling is the fifth book in her Harry Potter series.

In Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry there will be many changes. Even before school starts the story turns darker. Harry and his Muggle cousin Dudley are attacked by dementors and Harry has to use magic to save them - it is illegal for underage wizards to use magic outside of school.

Now Harry will be brought before the Ministry of Magic to decide if he will be expelled from school for breaking the law. In the meantime, Lord Voldemort is gaining strength and his followers have rejoined him.

Before the end of the book Harry and his friends will be faced once more with a task that would make adults weary. But in spite of their need to defend themselves, this year's Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is less than helpful.

Rowling is a brilliant writer. Upon a second reading, readers will pick up clues and nuances that were missed the first time around. If you have only seen the movie version of Harry Potter you have no idea what you are missing!

At the same time, Princess Gabriella Visconti show up on Nick's ship. She is interested in getting the money back that her brother invested with Cutter Salvage. Not only is Bria a distraction, Nick cannot be sure that she is not tied to the diamonds.

Adair writes sizzling romantic suspense. She is know for her stories is military men. Her Cutter Cay series takes a slight turn but still features capable men, plus she makes life aboard a ship sound ideal.

Lead Me On (Tumble Creek #3)

Lead Me On is the third book in the Tumble Creek series by Victoria Dahl.

Jane Morgan is the office manager for Jennings Architecture (owned by Quinn Jennings of the previous Tumble Creek book). She is a no nonsense worker who keeps Mr Jennings on schedule.

When Chase from Extreme Excavations come into the office, Jane is instantly interested. But, she does not date people from the office or muscly, tattooed laborers. She is looking for a professional man to settle down with. Unfortunately, the last few she has dated have been boring.

When Jane can't get Chase out of her head, she calls him. She is not looking for a relationship - more of a birthday present of one night of fun.

Then her brother is arrested. She feels like her childhood mistakes are coming back to haunt her. If anyone in Aspen finds out about her background (she feels that) they would no longer respect her. But it seems as if her old life and her new life are on a collision course.

Dahl has created another hit! She is a great writer who is a delight to read. Fans of romance or anyone who wants a fast, fun read should pick up one of her books.

Changing the Game (Play by Play #2)

Changing the Game by Jaci Burton is the second book in her Play by Play series about professional athletes.

Gavin Riley is a professional baseball player for the St. Louis Rivers. He is a great player and, thanks to his agent, he has a great contract - but he would almost play for free he loves the sport so much.

Elizabeth Darnell is his agent. As one of the very few female sports agents, Liz has to use some interesting tactics to get some people's attention. She has had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. And she has some unbreakable rules including: never mix business with pleasure.

That being said, she has been in love with Gavin for about five years. She represents him and his brother - a professional football player. She considers their parents to be family and spend holidays with them.

Her relationship with each member of the family is about to change because her relationship with Gavin is changing. They can both pretend they are just having fun and it won't affect their working relationship, but they can only pretend for so long.

Burton is known for her sexy romance novels that border on erotica, but she is also great at character development. Readers will feel like they know each character and will come to care about the outcome of the stories - not just the hot sex along the way.

City of Lies (Museum Keepers #2)

City of Lies by Lian Tanner is the second book in Museum Keepers series.

Ten months after the end of the first book, the city of Jewel has begun to settle into it's new lifestyle. Goldie Roth, no longer needing to live in the Museum of Dent, is back with her parents.

A note sent to her home informs her that the Museum has invited her to be the new Keeper. As only one other Keeper has been chosen in the last century, it is a great honor.

The night that Goldie goes to the museum to give her answer, she stops and picks up Toadspit on the way. His sister Bonnie follows them. When they spot her she convinces them to let her come if she can shoot her bow accurately - to prove she can take care of herself. But when she goes to retrieve her arrow, she is taken.

Goldie and Toadspit follow and end up on a ship. When Toadspit is discovered, Goldie is left in the city of Spoke trying to free them. But Spoke is about to begin the Festival of Lies - two days when people are not permitted to tell the truth.

Tanner's second book retains some of the magic of the first, but falls short of her amazing debut. Still, the characters are great, including a strong heroine. Considering her first book was so awesome, this book is still better than much of the YA fantasy available! Read it and join other readers in waiting impatiently for the third Keepers book.

Quinn is a successful architect. He has trouble dating because he works too much. But Lori's idea of fun will solve the problems of his always being late and missing important anniversaries.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling is the third book in the Harry Potter series.

Harry is about to begin his third year at Hogwarts, but for now he is still stuck with the Dursleys - his non-magical relatives. Wonderstruck

Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick is his second book in the style of combining story with storyboards. His first book in this style, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, won both the Newbery Award and the Caldecot Medal - the highest honors in children's literature for both story and illustrations. However, don't let the fact that this book is marketed for children prevent you from reading it. It is amazing.

Wonderstruck is the story of two people. One, Rose, lives in New Jersey in 1927. Her story is told in the illustrations. She can see the New York skyline from her house and creates wonderful miniatures of the buildings she can see outside.

In the text part is the story of Ben. Ben lives in Gunflint, Minnesota in 1977. He is a boy whose mother has just died. He is living with this aunt, uncle and cousin. They live next door to the cabin he and his mom lived in.

The stories of Rose and Ben overlap in interesting ways. Without giving away any spoilers, they both run away from home at a young age and find themselves in New York City - at the Museum of Natural History.

Selznick has created a brilliant narrative and a story that will delight readers of all ages. Selznick has been known as a great illustrator for years. But now that he is writing and illustrating his own books, readers should watch for anything he publishes! Wonderstruck is my new favorite book!

Selznick, Brian. (2011). Wonderstruck. New York: Scholastic Press.

The Hostage (Stratton #1)

The Hostage by Duncan Falconer is his first book featuring Stratton - a British SBS (like our Navy SEALs) undercover officer who is stationed in Northern Ireland fighting the IRA.

The battles in Northern Ireland between the British and various configurations of the Irish Republican Army have been ongoing since the 1800s. But now, the IRA may have a mole in British Intelligence who is helping plan their next moves.

At the same time, US Navy SEAL Hank Monroe has been assigned to SBS for a cross-training / good relations tour of duty. His wife is not happy about moving the family to England. She has been taught by her family in Boston to hate the British because of their occupation of Ireland.

When Monroe joins Stratton on a job that goes wrong it could lead to an international incident. Between the many players and sides trying to recover Monroe it could be all out war.

Falconer has created an engaging political/military thriller that will keep readers fascinated. There are currently seven book in the Stratton series. They will appeal to fans of Jack Higgins' Sean Dillon series or anyone interested in the Ireland-England situation.

Across the Great Barrier (Frontier Magic #2)

Across the Great Barrier by Patricia C. Wrede is the second book in her Frontier Magic series - an historical fiction series where the people who settled the Wild West used magic.

After helping to save the settlements west of the Great Barrier last summer, Eff has been invited to go back west to help a professor with a study of the wildlife. Little is known about life outside the Great Barrier - a wall of magic that surrounds the settled part of the United States and keeps magical creatures out.

With the help of a guide who is a circuit magician, Eff and Professor Torgeson will study the plants and animals that have re-inhabited the lands destroyed by magical mirror bugs last summer. No one travels without a guide due to the dangers of the west.

Wrede has created an alternative history of the United States which combines elements of westerns and fantasy to tell a story of courage and exploration. Though this second book reads a bit like the middle book in a trilogy, Eff's story is advanced as readers learn more about her world. Look for book three, The Far West, sometime in the future.

Once his is back at school, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are back together studying magic. But strange happenings begin to occur. And soon the school is not as safe as it once was.

Rowling brilliantly continues Harry's time at Hogwarts with more advance writing along with the more advanced magic Harry and his friends are learning. The Chamber of Secrets is dark for a kids' book, but will delight readers of all ages. If you are a fan of the movies - read the books. They really are quite good.

Talk Me Down (Tumble Creek #1)

Talk Me Down by Victoria Dahl is about a woman with a secret.

Molly Jenkins had been living in Denver when she inherited a house in the mountain town she grew up in. So after ten years of not even visiting, she is moving home.

It is really good timing as her ex-boyfriend has basically become a stalker. He has even befriended any new guy she goes on a date with to try to control her life.

Some space will be good. She can work - though no one (not her parents or brother or friends) knows what she does for money. She is a bestselling erotic fiction writer under a pseudonym. And the source of her original story still lives in town - he is now the police chief.

Dahl has written a great romance with a thriller twist. She is a great choice for a quick read at the beach or when you are stuck at home in the rain or snow.

A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Fire and Ice #5)

A Dance with Dragons is the fifth book in George RR Martin's series A Song of Fire and Ice. This volume takes place at the same time as the fourth book, A Feast for Crows, until the last quarter of the book when time catches up and the story lines from both books merge once again.

The fighting and politics of a new king for Westeros continues on both sides of the world. King Stannis travelled to the North all the way to the Wall to fight against the wildings who were trying to breach the kingdom. He then continues his campaign by striving for Winterfell - where one of the northern lords claims be holding a wedding between Arya Stark and his base-born son.

In Valyria, Queen Danerys - the rightful heir to the throne stolen by King Robert - has freed the slaves of the city of Meereen. Her three dragons are growing and her companions are eager to leave for Westeros to claim her seat. The armies of the other cities she has set free have other ideas about allowing her to live peacefully in Meereen.

Tyrion Lannister, on the run from Westeros after killing his father, is making his way to Meereen to join Danerys in her quest for the throne. His family has betrayed him and he would like nothing more than to see them pay. But the gods have other ideas about his journey.

Martin is a brilliant fantasy writer whose series is as intricate as it is long. His characters are believable and readers either love or hate them with all of their human faults. He also has no problem killing main characters who are loved by all. If you have not begun to read this series, I highly recommend it - though you may want to wait for the last two books so you can read it straight through!

The Final Hour (Homelander #4)

The Final Hour by Andrew Klavan is the final book in the Homelander series.

Charlie West has been on the run with no memory. In the previous book his memory started to return - why he was in prison, how he escaped, if he was a good guy or a bad guy... Now, in this final book, his memory is almost complete and he is sure there is one more thing he needs to do.

It is back in prison - recaptured - that he realizes that the Homelanders have one final attack planned on the US. All of his time undercover with them will be for nothing if he cannot get out of prison to stop the terrorist attack planned for New Years eve.

Klavan's series has been called a teen version of the TV show 24. It is so filled with non-stop action it is crazy. The Homelander series will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
